About Vitsi Mountain Protected Area

Vitsi Mountain Protected Area, located in the regional unit of Kastoria in northern Greece, is characterized by rugged terrain reaching a peak elevation of 2,128 meters (6,985 feet). The mountain is primarily covered by extensive beech and fir forests, providing vital habitat for many native species including bears, wolves, and various bird species. Geographically, the area features steep ridges, deep valleys, and crystal-clear mountain streams. The ecological importance of Vitsi Mountain lies in its largely undisturbed habitats which support a diversity of flora and fauna, including some rare and endemic species. Historically, the mountain has cultural significance due to traditional pastoralism and its role in regional historical events, and remnants of old shepherd trails remain throughout the area. Recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, and during winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular. The expansive views from the peak and along the ridges offer excellent photography and nature observation points. The protected area is managed with an emphasis on preservation and sustainable access, balancing human use with the conservation of its natural resources.
